Pesky potholes are hard to fight this winter
The pothole problem persists for City of Kokomo. The record-breaking cold temperatures of January have created major problems in the 300 miles of streets the city is responsible for patching. Although pothole repair crews have filled almost 1,000 potholes this winter they’re still trying to keep up – according to Randy McKay, City of Kokomo Director of Operations.
"This weather has been the worst we have seen in quite a few years, and it is taking a toll on the streets,” said McKay. “Our crews are working diligently to patch potholes as they surface, but we are already seeing a dramatic increase in the number of potholes popping up around the city. And with more extreme weather in the forecast, it might be awhile before we see relief.”
You can help City of Kokomo by reporting potholes by calling 453-4030 or tweeting the location of the pothole to @CityOfKokomo.
Potholes are caused by water entering roadway cracks and freezing – expanding the asphalt in the process. When asphalt thaws, roadways weaken and enable potholes to form.
Two Speedway locations in Kokomo face excise
Excise has penalized two Speedway gas stations in Kokomo for selling alcohol on Christmas Day. Indiana law prohibits the sale of alcohol from 7 a.m. Dec. 25 to 3 a.m. Dec. 26.
An anonymous tip helped excise cite the two Speedway locations – the locations could face penalties ranging from $1,000 fine to not being able to sell alcohol anymore. Excise didn’t provide information about what kind of fines the Speedway locations, 930 S. Washington St. and 1641 E. Sycamore St., will face. In Indiana, 109 Speedway stores faced penalties for selling alcohol on Christmas.
