Women build for a better Kokomo
Habitat for Humanity is building homes and strong women during the National Women Build Week, May 3 through 11. The National Women Build Week is even making a local stop here in Kokomo; as 28 women worked on a Habitat for Humanity home Sunday. The volunteers – 10 of them from the Gilead House – put siding on a home near Kokomo’s northwest side.
“We are excited to participate in this Women Build event,” said Mark Sloss, executive director of Kokomo Habitat for Humanity, said. “What an empowering opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help a responsible family obtain the dream of home ownership.”
Downtown Kokomo is building up
The former Firestone building is getting a makeover. Kokomo caught a glimpse of the progress during First Friday May 2. Kip Cor, a contractor based in Kokomo, Ind. and Memphis, Tenn, is rehabbing the old building into a retail hub for downtown Kokomo and renaming the spot: Firestone Plaza. Kipcor has pulled off awnings to show the building’s brick exterior and freshened it up with new paint, but that’s just the start. According to Kipcor, the building’s reopening is dependent on the tenants that will be anchored at the location.
