Male Call

Monday - Friday: 10:45 PM - 12:00 AM
Monday - Friday: 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM

The following is the text of a press release published in April of 2008:

"You start with a day in 1969. One day – one radio show. Then add another. You reach a week – and decide to do it again on Monday. And do that again until a month has passed, then a year, then a decade. Suddenly, if you’re Charlie Cropper, you realize that the first day has turned into ten thousand.

Charlie and his co-hosts, Tammy Lively and Bill Tandy, will celebrate ten thousand “Male Call” shows on WWKI on April 30th, 2008. For Charlie, most of those days were spent across the broadcast desk from Dick Bronson, with Tammy and Bill joining in after Bronson’s passing in 2002.

For ten thousand shows, Male Call has been Kokomo’s virtual public square – a gathering place for people from all walks of life and a marketplace for ideas and goods. Governors and Mayors, Sheriff’s and Police Chiefs, Senators, Congressmen, Councilmen, Commissioners, and businessman have joined the people of north-central Indiana for an on-going, on-air conversation about life in the Hoosier state. Politics, recipes, potholes, history, motorcycle helmets, speed limits, time zones, pink slips, crazy bosses, and cheating spouses all found a voice. Dick Bronson was married on the show, while many others attribute their marriage to “Match ‘Em Up Day” broadcasts. On 9/1/1, a marathon broadcast helped listeners express their confusion, fear, grief and anger. Male Call is also the driving force behind the long-term success of We Care, a charity auction that has, since it’s inception in 1973, raised over ten million dollars earned two awards from the President of the United States. It’s clear that, while the hosts of Male Call occupy center ring, the show has always been for and about the people of Indiana, fueled by their humor, ire and compassion. As Charlie says, “It’s their show.”

During the week of April 30th, Charlie, Tammy and Bill will host visits and phone calls from some of the people involved in Male Call over the past 39 years. Long-time listeners will hear voices from the past, both live and recorded, and will have the opportunity to share their own favorite Male Call stories. They’re encouraged to nominate the most-memorable Male Call show, and can do so by mail or email. WWKI has also posted a collection of nostalgic photographs and newspaper articles at wwki.com."
