The ingredients of good radio, what makes people want to listen? It’s not something many folks think about. But Kevin Burris thinks about it all the time. You can hear it in the sound bites he uses – from the 5:00 a.m. piano tinkle of “Back Home Again In Indiana” to the crickets he uses to tease Bill Tandy during Male Call.

Growing up in the Brownsburg area, Kevin's earliest memories include hearing about JFK’s assassination. “I also listened to WIRE with my dad in the station wagon,” he said. Indianapolis radio got his attention too. “I loved the old WNAP with Cris Conner, Bruce Munson, and Tom Cochran; that was ‘magic in a bottle’ – reverb on FM, that was cool,” Burris said. One his favorite toys as a child was a tape recorder. “(I had) several of them, I guess that planted the seed. I wanted to hear my voice, even though I hated it for years,” he said.

The most rewarding thing about radio for Kevin is being a public servant. “Especially when the weather turns bad; I was also on the air when the first Gulf War started – it’s good to be wanted!”

WWKI’s public service record is a great source of pride for Kevin. “The best thing about WWKI is the way they have become an inseparable part of north central Indiana and Kokomo over the years,” he said.
